[Demonstrative lithographic plates, depicting a scene from Freydal]

Description
An accordion-folded volume of nine plates, of the same image, allegedly from the unfinished illustrated prose narrative "Freydal," a fictionalized tale of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and his time participating in jousting tournaments to win the hand of a princess (based on his wife Mary of Burgundy). The volume is a sample of chromolithography, with the same image repeated with different colors added from each proceeding plate, with the final plate being a completed chromolithograph. The images depict what appears to be some sort of masquerade or jousting event, with spectators in the background, a flutist and drummer in the middle ground, and three men wearing feather headwear and veils in the foreground, one holding two torches, one standing next to a woman, and the other embracing a woman in a hug. The two woman are depicted in gowns and headdresses, as per descriptions of the narrative. There is also a possibility these are men cross-dressing as women. The plates are supposedly lithographed by Joseph Lanzedelly (or Lancedelly) the Elder (1774-1832), an Austrian lithographer, whose sons Karl (1815-1865) and Joseph (1807-1879) were also lithographers.

The front has a folded sheet with the caption: "O. K. Gerrish's Summary sheet and price list" with a list of various fruits available for sale.

    Manuscripts

    This collection consists of correspondence, ephemera, and photographs related to Charles "Chic" Sale's career as an actor and vaudevillian. The personal letters are mostly to and from Charles "Chic" Sale, Frank O. Sale, Lillie Belle Sale, and Marie Bishop Sale. The photographs are roughly organized into three different folders: Marie Bishop Sale; McCoy and Sale family; and Sale family. Box 8 contains larger photographs of Sale. There are also over 40 programs related to Sale from 1908 through 1914. The seven scrapbooks contain correspondence, ephemera, and photographs. The scrapbook in Box 7 (1) includes booking agreements from 1908 through 1931.
