    Oliver and Boyd's Object-Lesson Cards

    Visual Materials

One set of 20 instructional cards entitled Oliver and Boyd's Object Lesson Cards, ca. 1888. This set of cards was originally housed within a wooden box; they have since been removed and re-housed. A paper label, mounted to the underside of the lid, read: "Oliver and Boyd's Object-Lesson Cards on the Vegetable, Animal and Mineral Kingdoms." This set of 20 cards is comprised primarily of Mineral Kingdom and Animal Kingdom plates and number 1-14 (number 8 is missing). A complete list follows. Below the label title is a listing, in 3 columns, of each of the plates within each of the three series. At the bottom on the label, below the plate listings, is the publishers' statements: "Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd. London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Co., Limited." Each card describes a raw materials source, and traces its manufacturing process to the finished product or products. At the top of each card is the title and kingdom of the subject. Below it is (in most cases) a woodblock engraving of the subject or item at hand. Several pieces of realia are mounted near the image, and a listing of related trades and uses of the item is below that. The majority of each leaf consists of informational text about the material, it's manufacture and uses. At the bottom of each leaf is an ink stamp which reads: "Hinds & Noble, New York. Sole Agents for the United States." Exceptions to this are noted within the description for each card. ; No. 1 Animal Kingdom -- The Ox and Cow. ; No. 2 Animal Kingdom -- The Calf. ; No. 3 Animal Kingdom -- The Sheep. ; No. 4 Animal Kingdom -- The Horse. ; No. 5 Animal Kingdom -- The Goat. ; No. 6 Animal Kingdom -- The Rabbit. ; No. 7 Animal Kingdom -- Birds. ; No. 9 Animal Kingdom -- The Silkworm. ; No. 10 Animal Kingdom -- The Honey Bee. ; No. 11 Animal Kingdom -- The Cochineal and Lac Insects. ; No. 12 Animal Kingdom -- Mollusca. ; No. 1 Mineral Kingdom -- Introductory.
