One folder of images for painting entitled Prang's Outline Pictures with Directions for Coloring, Series 1, Children, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1888. Within the folder are 9 outline images for coloring; each is titled with the subject, generally characters from fairy tales. Printed in the lower left-hand corner of each leaf is "Copyright 1888 by L. Prang Co. Boston." Also within the folder are three printed sheets: one contains coloring instructions, one is an informational piece about the set, and the third is a manufacturer's advertisement for Prang's Christmas Cards.

Outline Pictures for Little Paint Brushes

One painting book entitled Outline Pictures for Little Paint Brushes, published by D. Lothrop & Co., Boston, copyright 1881. The title page is subtitled With Stories Giving Hints for Coloring, by the Editors of Babyland. The figures were drawn by George F. Barnes. The cover of the book shows a young girl sitting under a blooming tree branch using watercolor to paint in a book. The back cover features two outlined images in gold. Twelve of the fourteen images in the book are accompanied by stories which hint at which colors to use and where. All of the images have been filled in using watercolor. The note in the front of the book advises that "a good thing to do is to first copy the picture on white paper, and try colors upon that until you are suited, before painting the one in the book." One free hand image appears at the back of the book. It depicts a young lady sitting on a fence rail, looking back at the viewer over her left shoulder. The last several pages have had the corners trimmed or cut off.

Little People's Pictures Painting Book: Father Tuck's Little Artist Series

One painting book entitled Little People's Pictures Painting Book: Father Tuck's Little Artist Series, published by Kaufmann & Strauss Co., New York, ca. 1910. This 24-page painting book is comprised of lithograph images for painting and tracing and chromolithograph plates as samples. "Father Tuck's Little Artists Series" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The front and back covers are chromolithographs; the image on the front cover is of a boy, seated on the floor, in front of a painting he has created. The image on the back cover is of a child's drum toy. "Instructions for Little Artists" are printed on the inside of the front cover, and more information about color is printed on the inside of the back cover. "12.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the inside of the front cover.

High Art for Little People

One drawing/tracing book entitled High Art for Little People, published by D. Lothrop & Company, Boston, 1882. The cover image, surrounded by a floral border, is a cherub-like child sitting on a tree branch painting while four birds watch. The image of cats on the back cover, entitled "A Mother's Lullaby," is reproduced from the magazine Babyland, also published by D. Lothrop & Company. There are 31 images in the book--12 are slate pictures for children to copy, 15 are outlined images that the child could fill in, the remainder are comical drawings. Some of the images have been filled in using watercolors. All of the images have titles and depict scenes from the farm or anthropomorphic animals. On the inside cover, in pen, is the inscription "Bertie Woodworth/ From Aunt Fannie/ Christmas 1882" and under "Christmas" is the name "Albert" in a child's handwriting.
