Most of the records of slave laborers cover slaves that had been "turned over" to Johnson's command by the office of General Superintendent for Labor Robert Legare Singletary and his assistant superintendent T. B. Bennett. The office was part of the command of the Confederate Army's Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The records are for Nov 19, Dec. 14, Dec. 15, 1864, Jan. 5, Jan. 11, Jan. 26, Feb. 23, Mar. 19, Apr. 5, Apr. 30, May 6, May 27, June, July 13, July 14, July 15, July 23, July 25, and July 28. Entries list the names of the owners and their slaves, the district (South Carolina had been divided into four districts for the purposes of slave impressment), and notes regarding some slaves' health, hospitalization, desertion, death, etc. Slaves "volunteered" for service by the owners are noted separately; there are also separate lists of "free coloreds" that include "prisoners."
