The Arctic regions : illustrated with photographs taken on an art expedition to Greenland
Rare Books
This volume records the last of seven voyages to Labrador and Greenland that William Bradford sponsored or participated in during the 1860s. Born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts in 1823, Bradford established himself as a painter of ship portraits in Lynn and other local harbors. He eventually moved northwards up the New England and Canadian coasts, where he was inspired to travel to the Arctic. Between 1861 and 1867 he carried out a series of expeditions along the coasts of Nova Scotia and Labrador to paint icebergs and other scenery. In 1869, Bradford received support from broker and railroad baron Le Grand Lockwood (to whom the book is dedicated) to outfit the Scottish steamship the "Panther," which, with a party of 40 including John Bartlett, Dr. Isaac Hayes, and two photographers John L. Dunmore and George P. Critcherson, set sail on July 3, traveling to Baffin Island and Melville Bay, Greenland. The crew returned with a collection of photographs, sketches, and accounts of Inuit life. According to the bookseller, "The technical problems that attended the handling of wet-plate negatives under extreme conditions makes the quality of Dunmore and Critcherson's images all the more remarkable."
