    Stanley, Arthur Penrhyn, 1815-1881. Letter to John Robert Townshend, Viscount Sydney, 1805-1890

    Manuscripts

    The collection consists of personal letters among the Townshend family members, business correspondence, land papers and deeds, financial accounts, bonds, receipts, Government and political material, legal briefs and court opinions, literary material including epitaphs, poems, prayers and travel accounts, military material, wills, marriage settlements, family account books and diaries. Significant correspondents include George III, George IV, William IV and Victoria, as well as many members of the Royal family. Political correspondents include 1st Earl of Chatham, W.E. Gladstone, George Grenville, Lord Palmerston, Sir Robert Peel, Spencer Perceval, William Pitt, the Duke of Wellington, and John Wilkes. Important note: although this material includes the years 1769-1865 there is only one letter which refers slightly to the American Revolutionary War and no letters or other material deal with the American Civil War.

    Manuscripts

    This collection is what is known as an autograph collection and Kane spent years, not only collecting autographs of famous people on his own, but also acquiring the collections of other autograph seekers. This material spans multiple centuries and formats: from a 15th century manuscript on vellum to a 1951 typewritten letter. The collection includes accounts, letters, photographs, poems, government papers and royal proclamations, signed by, among others, actors and actresses, authors, explorers, kngs, magicians, queens, politicians, scientists, singers, and soldiers. Many of the famous people in this collection are also to be found in other manuscript collections in the Huntington Library.

    Manuscripts

    The collection consists of a small number of manuscripts by and about Gladstone, as well as photographs, engravings, prints and ephemera. The bulk of the collection is made up of letters by Gladstone, which deal mainly with British politics and business; there is also a small amount of personal letters by various other members of the Gladstone family. Other correspondents represented in the collection include: A.J.B Beresford Hope, Patrick William Campbell, Sir John Cowan, John Nielson Gladstone, Abraham Hayward, Henry and Catherine Holiday, Stafford Henry Northcote (Earl of Iddesleigh), George Cornewall Lewis, Henry William Primrose, Archibald Philip Primrose (Earl of Rosebery), and Robert Lowe (Viscount Sherbrooke).
