Materials related to Dana Gioia's work as a poet, essayist, and editor as well as his roles as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and Poet Laureate of California. The Writings series is divided into Poetry, Other Writings, and Publications, and includes drafts, galleys, published versions, and reprints of Gioia's poems, essays, and other writings, as well as notes, correspondence, reviews, and other related documents. The Professional series includes materials related to Gioia's work with the NEA, including documentation of his NEA nomination and confirmation; his congressional testimony; reports; publicity; and working documents and correspondence related to NEA programs such as The Big Read, Poetry Out Loud, NEA Jazz Masters, and others. There is also correspondence, press coverage, a scrapbook, and other documentation of Gioia's tenure as California Poet Laureate; and materials related to his 2007 Stanford University commencement address, including drafts of the speech, responses, and reprints. The Correspondence series is comprised primarily of Gioia's letter and email correspondence with other poets, publishers, and scholars, and also includes some biographical and other material related to each correspondent. The Broadsides and posters series includes poetry broadsides authored by Dana Gioia and others, and a few posters related to Gioia's poetry.

"The place is South Africa. It is home to my family it is where I was raised ... I left. I left for professional reasons, to pursue picture-making in the capital of photography, New York City. I have been living outside of South Africa for eleven years now, but have returned annually to make pictures there over the past five years ... The attempts to represent the complexity of South Africa by photographing its diverse constituents seemed too obvious an approach ... I began to photograph my family and stayed with that subject, occasionally including the lives of close friends ... The text that accompanies some of the images in the book is drawn from excerpts from my own and extended family's letters ... In this book, the three specific locales I explore are: home interiors, gardens, and open landscape. The collection consists of five series: Manuscripts, Correspondence, Photographs, Subject Files and Research Materials, and Ephemera. Manuscripts are subdivided into manuscripts by Octavia E. Butler, notecards, diaries, commonplace books, and manuscripts by others. They are arranged alphabetically by author, then title or chronologically within each subseries. These manuscripts consist primarily of drafts of short stories and novels, and related notes. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the author's last name, then chronologically. This series includes correspondence to and from Octavia E. Butler by friends, editors, family members, and other authors. Photographs are arranged chronologically in several groups: loose photos (small), loose photos (large), album pages, and photo album. This series includes images from Octavia's travels and speaking engagements.The subject files represent Octavia's arrangement of clippings by topic. The research materials are other clippings and subject materials that have been arranged by the cataloger, using Octavia's schema where possible. The ephemera are arranged in 19 subseries, alphabetically. In addition there are oversize materials, housed separately, for all the above series. Researchers should be sure to search the oversize series for additional materials.
