A collection of 30,000 engravings, drawings, water-color paintings, printed leaves from various early Bibles, missals, etc., extra-illustrating a copy of the Kitto Bible, the leaves of which are interspersed through the set. The exact edition of the Kitto Bible used as a basis has not been identified, but may be around 1850. The Kitto title page is undated and reads: "The Holy Bible ... With copious original notes, by J. Kitto, D.D. London: Wm. S. Orr and Co." and must therefore be at least later than 1844, as Kitto was made D.D. in that year. It is a different format from the other Kitto leaves and is probably not from the same copy.

Provenance
The prints and other added material were collected by James Gibbs (1804-1891). In 1873 the set of 60 volumes was sold to Theodore Irwin by the New York dealer J.W. Bouton; the invoice states that Boughton bought it from the "illustrators", meaning Gibbs and probably his son, also named James. Irwin marked certain prints as not being up to his standard, and added others, then sent the lot to Hammond in London for rebinding.

Ten leaves missing with loss of text after ff. 201, 245, 270, 294, 485, 507, 541. Positions of 2 biofolia reversed in the binding, so that ff. 172-171 and 190-189 should be read in this order.
