James Edward Glazier's Civil War experience is reflected in his letters to his parents, brother Charles, and friend Annie G. Monroe. He details his training in Annapolis, Maryland, Burnside's Expedition to the Carolinas, and his work in the hospital. A letter from his brother Ezra deals with religious aspects of the Civil War. In his diaries after the Civil War, Glazier writes about farming on the Pacific Coast from 1868 to 1882, his work, expenses, family news, social life, including Fourth of July celebrations, tent revivals, and the reunion of the 23rd Massachusetts Regiment in 1888.

Personal and professional correspondence of the Noble family, mostly Edward Noble and his son Patrick Noble, as preserved by Patrick Noble's family. The collection also includes a group of letters addressed to Edward Noble's uncle John Noble (1774-1819), and the correspondence of Floride Calhoun (1792-1866) and James Edward Calhoun (1826-1861), wife and son of John C. Calhoun, about the administration of Calhoun's estate and property. There are also several documents about slaves owned by the Calhoun, Cuningham, and PIckens families as well as legal documents used in various law suits brought about by the various family estates and property.

Collection includes correspondence, dispatches, communications, and other military documents received by David D. Porter during his command of the Union's Mississippi River Squadron during the U.S. Civil War from November 1862 to April 1864. Also included are telegrams to and from Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles and his assistant, Gustavus Vasa Fox, and a few postwar documents concerning naval affairs. Two contemporary copies of Ulysses S. Grant letters are present in the collection: Grant to Salmon P. Chase (enclosure of William P. Mellen letter to Stephen G. Hicks, 1863 December 4), 1863 September 26 (PR 194) and Grant to William P. Mellen, 1863 November 16 (PR 197).
