Ticket for the Meschianza

Description: Engraved ticket for the Meschianza, a festival to honor the departure of General Sir William Howe from British occupied Philadelphia, May 18, 1778. The invitation depicts a setting sun over the sea with Howe's crest along with the motto "Luceo discendens, aucto splendore resurgam". Cannons, drums, flags and other military apparatus decorate the borders.

With inscription on back signed by Henry Calder, who was one of the managers: "The favor of your meeting the subscribers to the Meschianza at Knights Wharf, near Poole's Bridge to morrow at half past three is desir'd. Hy. Calder. Sunday 17th May Miss ---- Craig".

Manuscripts
Journal that André kept while aide-de-camp to Charles Grey, from June 11, 1777 to November 15, 1778. There are no entries for the period from Dec. 30, 1777 to June 1778. The journal covers the Philadelphia campaign and its aftemarth, including the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, White Marsh, and Monmouth; British raids in New Bedford (1778, Sept. 5-6) and Martha's Vineyard (1778, Sept. 10-15) and Baylor's massacre at Old Tappan, N.J. (1778, Sept. 27) Also included are returns of troops under the command of Sir William Howe and Henry Clinton.
