The story of Hi Jolly, also known as Hadji Ali or Hi Jolly, Philip Tedro who came to Arizona as a camel driver for the U.S. Government in 1857 in an unsuccessful U.S. War Department attempt to use camels as beasts of burden in the Arizona desert. With Edward Fitzgerald Beale, he helped survey a wagon road between Fort Defiance and the California border, bridging the final gap in a transcontinental highway. Hi Jolly died on January 23, 1903, aged 75 years.
