    George Copland letters

    Manuscripts

The collection consists of 14 letters written by George Copland to various family members in Birmingham, England and 2 postmarked mailing envelopes and dates from 1861-1871. In a letter dated July 8, 1862 Copland signs with the name "John Reynolds" and continues to do so in all subsequent letters. Why he chose to adopt a new name after his arrival in Wisconsin is not explained by any of the letters in this group. The contents of the letters convey news about Copland's circumstances and his observations about life in Wisconsin. Topics include Wisconsin's harsh weather, the various occupations he pursues, economic conditions caused by the American Civil War, his recreations, the cost of goods, and his involvement in the local government of Burlington, Wisconsin. He also includes observations about immigrants and native-born Americans and contrasts between America and England, his country of origin.
