Professional and personal papers of Alexander Pope. The bulk of the materials are administrative in nature and format, such as letters, memos and reports. There is a considerable amount of political ephemera, legislation, litigation and published research documents, as well as photographs. The materials related to the implementation of Proposition 13 are the highlight of the collection.

The "California Gold Rush Fleet Encyclopedia of Vessels Sailing from the East Coast of the United States and Canada for San Francisco, December 7, 1848-December 31, 1849" comprises individual histories of 762 ships as well as various subject files, arranged in alphabetical order. Goodman records a broad spectrum of information derived from a variety of sources about the multitude of Gold Rush vessels. The bulk of the manuscripts are photocopies and some are heavily annotated in the author's hand. Some histories include hand colored illustrations of maps and ships. They were written and edited between 1970-1991.

Letters that Edward Kirby wrote to his wife and eldest son Jake between 1827 and July 1848 constitute the largest portion of the collection. Kirby's peacetime letters describe his travels in Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York State, and his trips to Washington, D.C., and discuss family news, business investments, the management of his two-thousand acre farm, the increasingly complicated financial affairs, the fallout from the Panic of 1837, and local news, including the events of the Patriot War (1837) in the neighboring Canada. Kirby, a leader of the local Whigs, also discusses state and national politics, in particular the internal improvements, protective tariff, and the annexation of Texas. Kirby also recounts Washington news and rumors and comments on various aspects of military life as well as the news of the Second Seminole War.
