George Thomas Anderson description of the Battle of Throroughfare Gap

    Manuscripts

Manuscript by George Thomas Anderson describing the involvement of the 1st Georgia Regulars at the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap, Virginia, on August 28, 1862. Anderson describes marching ahead of Longstreet's corps and directing the 9th Georgia Regiment under a Col. Beck to move forward and prevent surprise attacks. The troops unexpectedly encountered a Union cavalry and exchanged fire as the Georgia brigade attempted to take a hill near a railroad station. Anderson writes that when his men reached the top of the hill they were so close to the Union troops that one of Anderson's captains "brought down 3 or 4 with his pistol." He concludes that with the aid of Henry Bennings's regiments his men were ultimately able to hold off the Union troops and advance through the gap. On the verso of the manuscript is a sketch map illustrating Anderson's account.
