The Eugene Swarzwald Pictorial California and the Pacific Collection consists of 9,674 black and white photographs, negatives, a photograph album, magazine mock-ups, letters, and ephemera, dated 1909-ca. 1968. Eugene Swarzwald and the Swarzwald family collected the material for use in the magazine "Pictorial California and the Pacific." Images depict California and the West with some coverage of the rest of the United States and international destinations. The collection contains photographs depicting general city views of communities in California, scenic views of wilderness areas, images of parks, schools and universities, museums, and points of historic interest (including California mining towns and missions). The collection is strong in subjects related to leisure and social and recreational activities. Many of the photographs are by the Keystone Photo Service. Other photographers include Chuck Abbott, Adelbert Bartlett, Lionel T. Berryhill, Lil and Al Bloom, Hal Boucher, Campbell-Ricco-Mazzuchi Photography, Caroll Photo Service, Garth Chandler, Walter J. This collection contains the records of the Southern California chapter of the Index of American Design, which was a Federal Arts Project, 1933 to 1943. The collection consists of reports, correspondence, drawings, paintings, photographs, and ephemera, chiefly on California art and architecture within the 18th and 19th centuries, although other subjects and issues are also discussed. Subjects addressed within the collection include the history of African Americans in Los Angeles; Southern California history; California architecture, art and art history; California politics and government; the Federal Art Project; Native Americans in California; the history of California's material culture; old age pension plans in California; the history of Spaniards and Spanish Missions in California; and the United States Works Progress Administration in California.

A collection of photographs documenting miner Robert S. Watt and family living in the mountains of Los Angeles County at the turn of the 20th century. Views show daily activities and places visited; people hunting and living in cabins; horses; and a few group portraits, such as Los Angeles County Hospital Nurses on a picnic (1905) with names written on back. Other views show ships and a harbor, possibly in San Pedro, California; Los Angeles buildings (Plaza Church and County Courthouse) and oil wells. Mining scenes include the Watt Mines Supply Co. building in Los Angeles; men at an excavation; stamp mill machinery; a man standing at entrance to mine; and mule teams with supplies. There is also a group of photographs of Alaska, showing trappers, roadhouses, scenery, and a miner staking a claim on a river. There are also two U.S. citizenship certificates for Robert S. Watt (1890) and Alexander Barrie (1901), emigrants from Scotland.
