The bulk of the collection centers on Scherer's work with the Council of National Defense during the First World War. There are two and half boxes of documents which had been previously collected in two large volumes. The original arrangement (by date) has been retained for both collections (labeled "Bulletins" and "General Letters," respectively) in cataloged form. The "General Letters" collection is the most extensive; it comprises the entirety of Box 2 and the first half of Box 3. In some cases - due to the similarity of their subject material - two or more consecutive listings in the index have been cataloged together in one folder. There are two smaller collections labeled "Noteworthy Activities Undertaken by State Councils" and "I.C.A. Circulars." These two smaller document collections have their own folders in Box 3. All four contain an index - those for the two still-bound collections list the bulletins in the reverse order of their appearance. The two large volumes have been cataloged in the order listed in their indexes.

The majority of the collection is related to Marvin Sanford and his work in socialism, labor unions, and communism. The collection is comprised of 72 manuscripts, most of which are typescripts of articles by various socialist writers including Daniel De Leon, Samuel A. DeWitt, Edward Keating, Gustavus Myers, Emil Seidel, and Norman Thomas. Also included are articles and research notes written by Marvin Sanford. There are 88 pieces of correspondence, most of which are written to Marvin Sanford and chiefly deal with socialism and politics in California. Authors of correspondence include DeForest Sanford, Charles Pierce LeWarne and the World Socialist Party of the United States. The ephemera is comprised of newspaper clippings, and copies of Sanford's publications "Free Society," "The Searchlight," and "The Voice of Militant Labor." The entire collection covers socialism, communism, and union and labor issues, but more specifically the following topics and people are discussed: Edward Bellamy, cooperative societies including the Llano Colony, Eugene V. Debs, Ricardo Flores Magón, the Industrial Workers of the World, Jack London, and Thomas Mooney.

The entire collection deals with Allan Nevins, his work and Mort Reis Lewis' efforts after Nevins' death to keep his legacy alive. The manuscripts include various drafts, most of which deal with Allan Nevins. These include copies of Ray Allen Billington's eulogy for Allan Nevins, his article "Allan Nevins - Historian: A Personal Reminiscences," and a copy of a speech by Billington regarding Nevins, which he gave at the Huntington Library. This series also includes drafts of manuscripts by Mort Reis Lewis such as "A Country Boy at the Huntington Library" and "A Different Profile in Courage: The Triumph of Will." There are also copies of the following scripts by Lewis: "A Pair of Boots" and "Stroke of Fate." Also included are transcripts of interviews, press releases and miscellaneous notes all dealing with Allan Nevins. The correspondence chiefly consists of letters by and to Mort Reis Lewis about Allan Nevins. The letters discuss Nevins' career as an American historian and the senior research associate at the Huntington Library. This series also deals with Lewis and other historians publishing about Nevins and Lewis' effort to get Nevins' image on a stamp. The correspondence also covers American society and politics during the 1960s and 1970s. Allan Nevins is the author of 36 letters, most of which are written to Lewis. There is also much correspondence between Lewis and Allan Nevins' wife, Mary, and his daughters, Anne Nevins Loftis and Meredith Nevins Mayer. The ephemera, which chiefly deals with Allan Nevins, includes newspaper clippings, obituaries, brochures, programs and audiocassettes. The ephemera also touches upon Mort Reis Lewis and Ray Billington and their work. There are four audiocassettes which contain interviews with James Thorpe, Ray Billington and E. B. Long and audio from the Allan Nevins Seminar at Claremont College, May 30, 1969.

The documents demonstrate the range of legal, financial, and real estate-related transactions initiated by or concerning the Oreña Family and their associates. Included in this series are title deeds, land claims, and land grants pertaining to the family's properties in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. Also included are receipts and invoices. The manuscripts include four works pertaining to the Oreña Family as well as other early California families, namely the de la Guerra family. The series also contains two typewritten manuscripts: the first is Occurrences in California, as reported by Angustias de la Guerra Ord and the second is Carlota Koch's "La Guipuzcoana," which chronicles the lives of Gaspar Orena, Cesareo Lataillade, Maria Antonia de la Guerra, and those of their acquaintances. The correspondence includes personal and business letters to and by the Oreña Family members and their associates. Among the authors is Alfred Robinson (b. 1806-d.1895), author of Life in California (1891). Four photographs of the Columbus Library in Seville, Spain comprise the fourth series. These black-and-white photos were taken in September 1955. The photographer, who included only his/her initials of "AK," indicated that the images are not available for publication. Finally, three items comprise ephemera. These include two 1891 arguments issued by the Supreme Court of the State of California relating to the case of C.E. Lataillade, Plaintiff and Appellant, vs. Gaspar Oreña, Defendant and Respondent. The final item in this series is an autographed note written on a fragment of an ANP-ANETA News Bulletin, dated April 23, 1951.

The collection deals primarily with the professional and personal activities of Samuel Brooks Morris, a civil engineer of note in Southern California who was most active from the 1930s into the early 1960s. The collection deals with local (Pasadena and Los Angeles), state and national engineering concerns, largely related to water reclamation, dams, hydrogeology, water litigation, and a wide range of related technical publications. The material consists of a highly diverse mix of manuscripts and printed materials, including correspondence, maps, notes, charts, fliers, and brochures, often interspersed within each folder. The correspondence is primarly to and from colleagues, but also includes discusion with government officials at all levels from local to national. The collection includes a small number of photographs, located in appropriate sections of the collection by subject.
