Manuscripts
The collection primarily consists of correspondence and writings of Charles G. Halpine, dating from 1848 to 1868. Also present are photographs (mostly cartes-de-visite of Civil War soldiers), ephemera, newspaper clippings, an 1864 pocket diary, an incomplete novel draft, and a biographical sketch of Halpine written by his wife, Margaret G. Halpine. Correspondence discusses New York politics and literary life, and Halpine's experience in the U.S. Civil War. Correspondents include Horace Greeley, John Milton Hay, David Hunter, Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers, Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber, Alfred Howe Terry, and Margaret G. Halpine. Some letters written by Halpine and others are photocopies made from microfilm loaned by William Hanchett in 1967.

Manuscripts
The collection consists of five series: Manuscripts, Correspondence, Photographs, Subject Files and Research Materials, and Ephemera. Manuscripts are subdivided into manuscripts by Octavia E. Butler, notecards, diaries, commonplace books, and manuscripts by others. They are arranged alphabetically by author, then title or chronologically within each subseries. These manuscripts consist primarily of drafts of short stories and novels, and related notes. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the author's last name, then chronologically. This series includes correspondence to and from Octavia E. Butler by friends, editors, family members, and other authors. Photographs are arranged chronologically in several groups: loose photos (small), loose photos (large), album pages, and photo album. This series includes images from Octavia's travels and speaking engagements.The subject files represent Octavia's arrangement of clippings by topic. The research materials are other clippings and subject materials that have been arranged by the cataloger, using Octavia's schema where possible. The ephemera are arranged in 19 subseries, alphabetically. In addition there are oversize materials, housed separately, for all the above series. Researchers should be sure to search the oversize series for additional materials.

The Harold A. Parker Studio Collection of Negatives consists of 5157 glass plate negatives, film negatives, and panoramic negatives, 1889-1949, that depict commercial, residential and landscape sites in and around Pasadena and Southern California. The images provide a look at the commercial, residential and social development of Pasadena and surrounding areas during the early years of the twentieth century. The collection is especially rich in images of residential architecture in Pasadena, Altadena, and San Marino; images of Lake Tahoe; depictions of, and activities at, the Raymond, Maryland, and Huntington Hotels in Pasadena; and the commercial, social and cultural landscapes of Pasadena. The collection also provides, through its breadth and depth of subject matter, an example of the career activities of a commercial photographer in Southern California in the early years of the twentieth century.
