Photograph collection of American West outlaws

    Visual Materials

A collection of photographs primarily of outlaws and lawmen of the 19th century American West, compiled by Western writer Eugene Cunningham (1896-1957). The majority are copies made from the collection of Noah H. Rose and bear his stamp: "N. H. Rose / The Famous Rose Collection of Old Time Photographs." There are some original photographs, including views of a storefront display of Eugene Cunningham's books, and snapshots of headstones or landmarks, such as Judge Roy Bean's saloon outpost. Other subjects include Texas Rangers; famous outlaws (several shown dead) and their lawmen pursuers; portraits of Native Americans (small number of photographs); frontier lynchings of criminals; and miscellaneous views of cattle herds, saloons, a faro gambling game, and Western town scenes. There are multiple photographs related to the Younger brothers; Sam Bass and his gang; Billy the Kid (a.k.a. William Bonney); the Dalton Brothers; Jesse James; Robert LeRoy Parker (a.k.a. Butch Cassidy); and train robber Black Jack Ketchum, among others.
