The detailed maritime diary of James Bradley from the time he joined the Ajax, a British 74-gun ship of the line commanded by Captain Robert Waller Otway, at Woolwich on 28 July 1809. The Ajax served chiefly in the Mediterranean during the following four years. Entries include records of daily sailings, orders given and received, ports visited and stations kept, the comings and goings of other ships in the fleet, descriptions of actions at sea, daily shipboard life, and visits by distinguished persons including the Pope, the Princess of Wales, and the King of Sardinia. Bradley records an encounter with the French fleet off Toulon in July 1810 and gives an extended account of the the disastrous British landings at Palamos in Catalonia, Spain, on 13 December 1810.
