    Manuscripts

    The collections consists of letters, poems and other manuscripts written by various members of the Leigh family and other people in their circle. The letters are mainly concerned with the intimate, mundane, playful and tragic aspects of family life from the early modern period until the middle of the 19th century. There is also a small number of poems, written by or copied out by family members, a Hymn, a speech, and a travel account. The collection also contains the 19th century volume, titled in gild on spine "Original Family Papers &c. Vol. 1. MSS." Letters and other material purchased by the Huntington Library Collectors' Council have been removed from the volume by the Huntington Library Conservation Department. An unknown number of letters were removed from the volume prior to the Huntington Library purchase.

    [Collection of prospectuses for early 19th century English books]

    Contains covers and/or title pages, some with title vignettes, and specimen pages for 7 English publications dating from 1807 to 1831. The prospectuses/dummies are bound together in marbled-paper boards with red leather spine and corners. Publishers' whose work is represented include: John Sharpe, Piccadilly; Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green; Charles Tilt, 86 Fleet Street and Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme. Sample illustrations are included with some of the specimen pages.

    Bindley pamphlets

    Collection of pamphlets and broadsides published in London between 1681 and 1683 collected into a volume and annotated by Narcissus Luttrell. Luttrell gave these volumes the title "Poetry longwaies". It is not known how many of these collected volumes were ultimately created. Luttrell's collection passed on to James Bindley who gives his name to the volume here at the Huntington. At the sale of Bindley's collection in 1818-1820, 3 volumes of these collected pamplets were sold. Eventually one has come to the Huntington (1681-1683), one to the Newberry (1660-1680) and one to the Clark (1683-1685) where it is known as Poetry longwaies. All three volumes have been microfilmed and photostat reproductions of individual items from the Huntington copy are also available.

    Electrical technology in the 19th century: the electrochemical cell and the electromagnet: typescript draft of article

    Copy of typescript of the first of a series of three articles by W. James King that would be published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1962 as the three-volume bulletin entitled The Development of Electrical Technology in the 19th Century. The typescript contains editorial marks, and includes an Introductory Statement declaring the purpose of the series to be "to provide some convenient landmarks in the development of electrical technology in the 19th century." The typescript discusses the early research of Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta in the late 1700s, and focuses on the development of the electrochemical cell and the electromagnet, devices instrumental in the invention of electric motors in the mid-19th century. Also includes a one-page letter written by King to Bern Dibner responding to a letter from Dibner and inviting Dibner to visit the Niels Bohr Library for the History of Physics.

    Lindley Bynum collection of reminiscences of life in 19th century southern California

    Manuscripts

    These five reminiscences, which were collected by Lindley Bynum, were written by individuals who came to southern California in the second half of the 19th century. They all lived in Los Angeles County, more specifically Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Pasadena, and San Gabriel. The five authors discuss life in early California including their social lives and education, their interaction with the Gabrielino Indians, the citrus industry, agriculture, farming and irrigation. California pioneers Abbott Kinney and William Wolfskill are mentioned.
