The Jay T. Last collection of education prints and ephemera contains over 1,800 printed items related to education in the United States from 1788 to approximately 1930, with the bulk of the items dating from 1850 to 1910. Most of these items are lithographs, but engravings and woodcuts are also included. The collection includes over 30 large-size items comprised mainly of lithographed views of colleges and universities, diplomas and other certificates, penmanship examples, and uncut sheets of rewards of merit. Small-size items number approximately 1,800 and contain a variety of materials, including copy and writing books (composition books), arithmetic and ciphering books, tuition bills, programs and tickets to graduations and other school events, certificates, trade cards, student identification cards, postcards, ribbons, and printed billheads and letterheads (with and without manuscript text). The collection highlights institutions, products, and services relating to personal knowledge, understanding, character building, and moral and social qualities including the tools, equipment, supplies, and structures used for learning and teaching these disciplines in the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This includes items associated with academic achievement, exhibits, lectures, and institutions of learning.

The collection consists of correspondence, ephemera, photographs, essays, notes, research material, reports, school records, yearbooks, poems, short stories, and speeches. Although the majority of the collection was written by Leroy Jackson, there are several other authors contained in the collection including David Greene, William Hobart Hare, John Collier, John Johnson Enmegahbowh, Lynn J. Frazier, Joseph Alexander Gilfillan, Charles Lemon Hall, Samuel William Pond, W. Carson Ryan, Alfred L. Riggs, Thomas Lawrence Riggs, Jedediah Dwight Stevens, and Frederick Jackson Turner. The material covers the following subjects: early missions and missionaries to Native Americans in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin; Indian schools in Alaska and New Mexico; the Navajo; the Hopi; the public school and university in America and American education; progressive education; probation and the juvenile court.

This collection contains periodicals with content written by or about the poet, novelist, and short-story writer Charles Bukowski, covering a span from 1941 to 2009, and is a subset of the Charles Bukowski Printed Material Collection. The materials consist of nearly 400 issues of 248 periodicals that contain poems, short stories, interviews, excerpts, and drawings by Bukowski, as well as photographs of him, and articles or interviews about him, or in which he is mentioned. The materials span from Bukowski's first published short story "Aftermath of a Lengthy Rejection Slip," which was published in Story magazine in 1941, to obituaries and articles about Bukowski and posthumously printed poems and short stories that appeared after his death in 1994. The items range from small literary journals to large weekly news magazines published in a number of countries and in a variety of languages including English, German, and French. Approximately 90 periodical titles received with this collection are not included in this finding aid but are instead cataloged individually; they may be retrieved by doing a keyword search for "Charles Bukowski Printed Material Collection" in the Huntington Library Online Catalog: catalog.huntington.org. The collection inventory contains entries listing the periodical title, issue number, date, publisher and publisher location, language (if other than English), the titles, page numbers, and authors of the Bukowski-related pieces, and a short description of the content.
