  The collection consists of the personal and business papers of Henry E. Huntington. There is material related to the Huntington, Holladay, and Metcalf families, but most of the collection deals with Huntington's business interests in Southern California, railways, real estate, and industry. Series 2. Henry E. Huntington and his family includes biographical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, and physical objects. There is material related to the Huntington Land and Improvement Company, Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, and the Pacific Electric Railway Company as well as other businesses in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and San Gabriel Valley, California. This material includes business records, account books, annual reports, correspondence, maps, tracts, balance sheets, and others. There is also material related to the founding of the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens including auction catalogs, invoices, receipts, and bills for art and rare books, and information regarding a lawsuit about Huntington's estate tax after his death, and the passing of Proposition 15, in 1930, which exempted The Huntington from paying California property tax. There is also material related to Collis P. Huntington and his business interests and Arabella Huntington. Also included are the blueprints for the Huntington's San Marino residence. Series 3. Correspondence contains over 22,000 pieces of personal and business correspondence spanning 1794 to 1970. The physical objects include Henry E. Huntington's lunch box, razors, traveling trunk, and other items.

  James F. Mercer papers

  A collection of over 120 letters, manuscripts, and documents (previously bound, original binding is in Box 4)). The collection includes James F. Mercer's letters written during his travels in Europe, Jamaica, and North America (1736-1755). This includes five letters by Mercer from Fort Oswego (1755-1756). The collection also includes approximately 70 letters written in the aftermath of Mercer's death, including correspondence of Mercer's brother, William Mercer, friend James Grahame, and Grahame's 13-page account of the Battle of Oswego. Other authors include: Andrew Douglass, Joseph Austin, Colin Drummond, Charles Craven, Francis Lewis, James Robertson, and Stephen Sayre. Collection includes several documents regarding James F. Mercer's finances and belongings after his death. Also included is a copy of Papers relating to the first settlement and capture of Fort Oswego, 1727-1756 [Albany: Weed, Parsons & Co., 1849], with Mercer escutcheon pasted on the front inner cover.

  Sir Francis Beaufort Papers

  This collection contains the papers of British admiral and hydrographer Sir Francis Beaufort and members of the Beaufort and Edgeworth families dating from 1710-1953 (bulk 1780-1890) and consisting of diaries, journals, account books and correspondence. Subject matter includes the Beaufort and Edgeworth families; British naval history of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in particular the period of the Napoleonic Wars; geography and hydrography, particularly of the Eastern Mediterranean; Irish affair of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly related to economic and commercial issues; and the Royal Society and scientific affairs in England in the early 19th century. The bulk of the collection is comprised of the papers of Sir Francis and includes journals of his naval service (1791-1812); journals, notes, and working papers for his survey of Karamania (or Caramania), along the southern coast of Turkey (1813-1817); his professional diaries as hydrographer to the British Navy (1840-1857); and 854 letters by Sir Francis. Notable topics included in the correspondence of Sir Francis includes a letter-journal of his first sea-voyage, to Indonesia (1789, July 24); a description of the Battle of San Joseph, in which he was critically wounded (1800, Oct. 28); letters to Richard Lovell Edgeworth detailing the construction of the Dublin-Galway telegraph (1803) and later discussing various projects for navigation mensuration (1808, May 5); commentary at length on the death of Lord Nelson (1805, Nov. 9); a voyage to Cape of Good Hope (1806, May 16-22); Malta (1808, Oct. 21); Quebec and French Canada (1809, Oct.-Nov.); and an explanation of a naval cause celebre in which he opposed the Admiralty by asserting that an escaped slave that had served 2 years on his ship was by definition enfranchised (1814, Feb. 3); a visit with Sir Walter Scott (1821, Apr. 23); the intellectual community in Paris (Laplace, Cuvier, etc.) (1825, Nov. 4); an eyewitness description of the Coronation of William IV (1831, Sep. 9); Sir Francis's knighthood ceremony (1848, May 7); and attempts to locate Sir John Franklin by balloon (1850, Jan. 9). Letter from Davis Strait describing problems of mensuration in polar regions. 1824, July 1. Ussher, Henry. Letter discussing astronomical research. 1789, Nov. 6. In addition to the papers of Sir Francis, the collection also includes the papers of other members of the Beaufort family including thirty-seven letters and four diaries of Sir Francis's father, Daniel Augustus Beaufort; seventeen letters and a journal of family history by Sir Francis's first wife, Alicia Magdalena Wilson Beaufort (d. 1834); a volume of original botanical watercolor paintings by Frances Anne Beaufort Edgeworth (1769-1865); and correspondence with and about writer Maria Edgeworth, including a series of letters from her to Sir Francis discussing literary maters and the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, dating from 1814-1827. There are also two letters by Sir Francis describing in detail the critical response to Maria Edgeworth's Patronage (1814, Feb. 3), and a letter discussing details of the publication of Edgeworth's novel Ormond (1817, June 12). Additional family correspondents include: William Lewis Beaufort (21 letters); Frances Anne Beaufort Edgeworth (3 letters); and Richard Lovell Edgeworth (7 letters). The oldest item in the collection is a grant of nobility to Francis de Beaufort (Sir Francis's ancestor) from Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I Hapsburg, dated March 4, 1710.   Anthony family collection

  The collection of 162 pieces contains primarily letters and some manuscripts concerning Anthony family affairs and woman suffrage activities, dating from 1844 to 1945. This group of papers was assembled by Una R. Winter, Director, and Alice L. Park, Associate Director, of the Susan B. Anthony Memorial Committee of California. There are four large letterbooks which contain letterpress copies of approximately 1372 pages of correspondence written by Susan B. Anthony's cousin Joseph Anthony (Box 4). There is also an autograph speech of Susan B. Anthony (AF 79) and a manuscript by Joseph Anthony titled "A Trip to the Bahama Islands" (AF 76). Other subjects included in the collection are the Battle of Osawatamie and ideas and discussion about populism, racism, and religion. There are several letters which discuss a bust of Susan B. Anthony by the artist Lorado Taft, and one letter promoting a recent volume of The History of Woman Suffrage (AF 28). Anthony family members represented in the collection include Susan B. Anthony and her relatives: cousin Jessie Anthony (1856-1918) and Jessie's father, Joseph Anthony (1829-1897), and grandfather John Anthony (Susan's uncle); niece Lucy E. Anthony (1859-1944); second cousin Katherine Boyles; niece Maude Anthony Koehler (1865-1950); and nephew Frank Anthony Mosher.Significant figures related to the history of woman suffrage represented in the collection include: Susan B. Anthony, Anna Howard Shaw, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Stone Blackwell, and Carrie Chapman Catt. There are also some letters to and about the artist Lorado Taft and one letter by Frederick Douglass. Note: 49 original letters [AF 18 (1-43) and AF 24 (1-6)] written by Susan B. Anthony to Jessie Anthony and Carrie Chapman Catt were removed and placed in Box 5, which is restricted. Typewritten copies of these letters have been filed in Box 1 of the collection for research use.In Box 3, there are two loose-leaf binders and one envelope of typescripts of Susan B. Anthony letters from collections held in other libraries. These materials are from the Anna Dann Mason collection (47 letters), Sophia Smith collection (58 letters) and Alma Lutz collection (52 letters).
