A collection of scrapbooks and clippings of Thomas Nast cartoons, and one original drawing
Rare Books
A collection of scrapbooks, clippings and tear sheets of political cartoons by American cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902), primarily from Harper's Weekly (1868, 1872, 1874-1881), with others from the Insurance Observer (N.Y.) (1896-1897), the New York Gazette (12 pgs., May 15, 1892), and unidentified sources. There is also one ink drawing of the "Tammany Tiger," depicting a tiger on the prowl, lettered and signed by Nast (undated). Most loose illustrations (clippings) are individually mounted on boards. The clippings in scrapbooks are adhered to paper pages, and most have dates and names of publications. There is also a folder of four Nast illustrations of Santa Claus from the pages of Harper's Weekly, 1879 and 1881.
