Approx. 85 items: newspaper clippings, mostly from small papers, many of them weeklies, commenting on "newspaper deaths" in general and in particular on the closing of the Los Angeles Examiner (which merged with the Herald) and the Los Angeles Mirror (which merged with The Times). Folder contains some transcripts from broadcast news programs related to the newspaper closings. Some papers put forward the opinion that Americans lost some of their "freedom of choice" when a small paper folded or was subsumed by a larger one. (Anaheim Gazette) Split into three folders.

Approx. 90 items: newspaper clippings, mostly from small papers, many of them weeklies, commenting on "newspaper deaths" in general and in particular on the closing of the Los Angeles Examiner (which merged with the Herald) and the Los Angeles Mirror (which merged with The Times). Among the publications collected here are California Bowling News (Glendale), Citizen News (Hollywood), Mackay Miner (Mackay, ID), Crestline Courier, Redondo Beach Reflex, and even the Wall St. Journal. Some criticized LAT who they felt was gobbling up the smaller competition. Others, like the Highland Park News-Herald, said that this meant "the future belongs to the suburbs," which was, Highland Park being a suburb of L.A., a self-serving message. The bulk of the manuscripts consist of legal materials regarding the Morley estate and children, W.R. Morley and Ada L. Morley. Manuscripts also include official court papers, bank statements, and legal agreement drafts. The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters from Ada M. (Morley) Jarrett to Manly M. Chase about various personal and business matters such as business advice, stocks, land, legal issues, and family matters. Other correspondence in the collection include letters written to Manly M. Chase that cover a variety of personal and business issues related to Chase's life. Subject matters include business transactions, legal issues, money matters, and personal matters regarding the lives of the Morley children. Notable items also include several telegrams that recount the death of William R. Morley.
