Caroline Matilda Hillhouse letters to Jeannette G. Kelsey

A collection of the papers of the Kelsey family of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania from 1851 to 1948; the papers include correspondence, a memoir and a diary, printed volumes, photographs, and ephemera. The voluminous correspondence of Jeannette G. W. Kelsey, her husband, children, extended family, friends, social connections, and business people covers the literary, intellectual, cultural, political, and business topics of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Subjects covered in the collection are American and British politics; the expatriate community in Europe; family relations; World War I; the Catholic Church; and business affairs. There is a small amount of material related to the businesses and estate of Jeannette's father Cadwallader C. Washburn. Correspondents include, among others, Bessie Rayner Belloc, John Murray Brown, Julia Pitt Byrne, Annie Fields, Fola La Follette, Marie Belloc Lowndes, Ida Vernon, and Cyrus Woodman.

This collection contains of the business records of the Merrymount Press and the related papers of its founder Daniel Berkeley Updike (1860-1941). The bulk of the collection consists of financial volumes; correspondence with customers, publishers, illustrators, craftsmen, and suppliers; bills; estimates; and scrapbooks with specimens of work. While the majority of the correspondence is comprised of letters, there are occasionally proofs, specimens, and cloth, paper, fabric samples, etc., found with the correspondence. The records reflect Updike's involvement with printing across the United States and in Europe, though much of his work was produced for clients in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York City. Some of the correspondence reflects Updike's personal interests including Rhode Island history and churches and charitable work with poor children as well as prison inmates.

The collection consists of letters, photographs and clippings related to the life and political career of William Gibbs McAdoo. Much of the McAdoo correspondence deals with his public appearances and engagements as a U.S. senator and also his failed attempt at re-election in 1938. Also of interest is McAdoo's involvement with the first Pan-American flight in 1936 and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's campaign trip to California in July 1938. There are also materials related to McAdoo's involvement with the Liberty Bond Act during World War I and the construction and management of the Hudson River Tunnels.
