The correspondence deals primarily with the gold mining efforts of James Hackett in Rough and Ready, California. The majority of the letters are from Hackett to John E. Ellis, an investor in Hackett's mining venture, who had extensive copper mining interests in California and who was a superintendent of the San Francisco Copper Mining Company.
