The collection consists of letters (including 1 letter book), manuscripts (including 50 diaries), documents (including 55 account books, 12 cash books, and 5 miscellaneous volumes), and photographs related to the lives and activities of various Janin family members and the extended Janin-Blair-Jesup-Croghan families. Subject matter in the collection includes: politics and government in Washington, D.C., and Louisiana; society and customs in Washington, D.C., and New Orleans; Blair House (Washington, D.C.); land titles in Indiana Territory, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Missouri; the Ocean Canal and Transportation Company, which ran from Louisiana to St. Louis; the history of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, from the time of purchase by John Croghan in 1839 until 1932, when it became a national park (at which time Violet Blair Janin was the primary owner); and mining in Australia. Persons represented in the collection include: James Lawrence Blair, Mary Jesup Blair, Violet Blair Janin, John Croghan, William Croghan, Albert Covington Janin, Louis Janin, Julia Clark Jesup, Thomas Sidney Jesup, George M. Manuscripts
The William Randel Research Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, photographs, and ephemera. The bulk of the collection consists of Randel's notes and study materials used to write the chapters of his book on Samuel Brannan. These materials consist of handwritten notes regarding useful information found in books and articles; reference and material notations and locations; photocopied articles and texts of interest; newspaper clippings; and photocopied pictures. The notes and study materials cover Chapters 1 through 7 of Randel's book and include additional notes and materials researched by Randel for the purpose of adding to his previous notes. Notable chapter subjects include Sam Brannan's childhood (Ch. 1); Joseph Smith and Mormonism (Ch. 2); Lola Montez (Ch. 4); Gold Rush in California (Ch. 4 & 5); Sam Brannan vs. Central Pacific Railroad (the Big Four including Collis Huntington) court case (Ch. 5); Brannan's divorce (Ch. 6); Mexico territory issues (Ch. 7); and the death of Sam Brannan (Ch. 7). William Randel's research notes have been organized according to their original order as received by the cataloger.

The collection contains letters, documents, including 190,000 reports, 1200 maps, 500 photographs, and 8200 pieces of printed material related to the life and career of Ralph Arnold. Subjects represented in the collection include: mining, petroleum, and seismology in the Western United States as well as Canada, Mexico, Cuba, and South America; political papers from 1914 to 1956, mostly concerning the campaign of Herbert Hoover for president; family and personal papers from 1836 to 1961 of Arnold and his father, Delos Arnold, containing source material on Pasadena and Southern California local history. The collection also contains Arnold's field books, including those made at Stanford University with the U.S. Geological Survey from 1900 to 1909.

The collection consists of the correspondence files of Frederick Hanley Seares. While roughly one half of the papers deal with administrative matters of the Mount Wilson Observatory, the remainder cover his scientific work. There are also some manuscripts, notes and notebooks (Boxes 19-21) related to Seares's research activities.
