  Manuscripts

  The collection consists of correspondence, business and financial papers, family notes, bound volumes, and ephemera related to the Banning family and collected by Katharine Stewart Banning. It includes most of her original notes on family traditions (particularly Christmas), and genealogy. The correspondence consists primarily of family letters, and correspondents include Ellen Banning Ayer, Frederick Ayer, Elizabeth Lowber Banning, George Hugh Banning, Hancock Banning (1865-1925), Joseph Brent Banning (1861-1920), Katharine Stewart Banning, Phineas Banning, William Banning (1858-1946), William Lowber Banning, William Phineas Banning, Beatrice Ayer Patton, and George Hugh Smith. The legal, land, and financial papers include contracts, deeds, titles, and statements of account for Banning properties in and around Los Angeles. The miscellaneous manuscripts include sewing instructions from the American Red Cross, notes on Santa Catalina Island, and some photographs, as well as copies of printed articles on the life of Phineas Banning. Volumes include "Memories of Phineas Banning" (c.1895-1909), a Yale scrapbook belonging to Joseph Brent Banning Jr. (1889-1969) with accompanying ephemera, a Virginia Military Institute yearbook (1914) owned by Hancock Banning Jr. (1892-1982) with accompanying photographs, embossed volumes used to copy stories and poems and owned by Ellen Barrows Banning (Ayer) and May Alice Banning (1876), a Banning Rancho log book (1889-1894), various family scrapbooks assembled by Katharine Stewart Banning, various notes on "Bill's Comfort Bag for Soldiers and Sailors" (c.1917-1941), and Katherine's Los Angeles Children's Hospital notebooks, as well as a diary she kept while traveling to England aboard the Lusitania in 1914. Also included in the collection are various published books owned by the Bannings and miscellaneous ephemera.

  The collection contains correspondence, documents, minutes, newspaper clippings, photographs, poetry, and printed materials pertaining to the Llano del Rio Colony and its successor, Newllano. Subjects represented throughout the collection as a whole include the Llano and Newllano colonies, socialism in the United States, socialist societies, Job Harriman, Morris Hillquit (1869-1933), George T. Pickett (1876-1959) and Sidney Young.

  The collection consists of the personal and business papers of Thomas Lord Kimball, primarily focused on his activities with the Union Pacific Railroad. The personal correspondence includes over 330 letters sent by Kimball to his wife Mary Porter Rogers Kimball between 1859 and 1893, a letter from Kimball to his daughter Frances (1870), and a letter to Mary Kimball from her brother I.S. Hodsdon (correspondence between Hodsdon and Thomas Kimball is included in the business correspondence). The personal papers also include diaries kept by Kimball between 1860 and 1899, diaries kept by Mary Kimball between 1890 and 1898, and a biographical sketch of Kimball. The railroad papers include business correspondence from a variety of correspondents including Frederick L. Ames, Sidney Dillon, I.S. Hodsdon, W.H. Holmes, Jay Gould, and E.P. Vining, as well as a few pieces of outgoing correspondence by Kimball. The financial and operation papers include Kimball's Union Pacific pocket notebooks dated 1891-1899, a small group of Jay Gould manuscripts (1877-1880), correspondence on the W.C. Thompson scandal (1872-1873), a letter appointing Kimball as travelling agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. (1860), correspondence on the sale of a Unitarian Church in Omaha (1877-1880), production summaries for the Union Depot in Omaha (1879-1896), and miscellaneous railroad agreements, circulars, passes, receipts, promissory notes, financial statements, and stocks and bonds. The political papers consist of incoming correspondence, an agreement for Charles H. Brown to back the Union Pacific in pending legislation before Congress (1877), an agreement between Kimball and the National Union Publishing Co. (1877), a congressional voting record (1878), and a payroll. The mining papers include items related to the Newcastle Mining & Improvement Co. in Wyoming (1891-1894) and the Ella Mine in Idaho (1879-1880), as well as an analysis of coal on the Union Pacific Railroad line and a report on the coal business in Wyoming (1888). Also included is a box of newspaper clippings regarding Kimball's railroad activities from 1888-1889 (approx. 470 items).

  The Banning Family Collection of Photographs, Part II, 1814-1979, consists of 1204 photographs and 23 photographs albums. The three most substantial categories of images in this collection are views of Santa Catalina Island; Banning family properties and residences in southern California; and portraits of family members and relatives. Of special significance are the Catalina photographs documenting the development of the island from a natural enclave with a few inhabitants to a thriving tourist resort. Volume 7 in the Family Album section contains images of the devastating effects of the Catalina fire of 1915. Also of particular interest are photographs of the George S. Patton family.

  The Correspondence, Manuscripts, and Ephemera Series contains Irving Hill's personal and professional papers, including correspondence, dockets, court instructions and orders, newspaper clippings, photos, and speeches. The vast majority of the professional papers originated from Hill's tenure as a U.S. District Court judge. This series is arranged alphabetically by genre.
