  Microfilm of a record book kept by the Church Historian's Office tracing the early history of Mormon settlement in Utah, also referred to as history of Brigham Young (it may have been kept in Young's name). The volume opens with a section entitled "Early Records of Utah," which covers 1847-1851 and begins with Orson Pratt and Esratus Snow's arrival in Salt Lake City. Subsequent sections are entitled "Incidents in Utah History" (1852-1854) and Utah Historical Incidents (1855-1867). Topics covered include a history of the Mormon Church, history of Mormon settlement in Utah, establishment of political and religious councils, experiences of Church leaders, interactions with local Indians, and colonization missions.

  Arthur Hurtt sketchbook

  Manuscripts

  This sketchbook contains drawings by Arthur Hurtt of various locations in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. The majority of the sketches are views of Utah and Salt Lake City in 1890, including the Mormon Tabernacle. Inscription in inside front cover: "From Arthur H. to our friend Jesse Pleasted sincerely. January 1936. Memories of Salt Lake City." Inside front cover also has a photograph of Hurtt (taped to book). Some of the sketches are loose.

  This disbound album contains 59 photographs consisting mostly of commercial views of cities and miscellaneous subjects, dating from circa 1870s-1880s, including images of Mormon figureheads, Salt Lake City, Utah; city scenes of San Francisco; and some views of Native Americans of the Southwest and Great Plains. Also included are posed photographs of Japanese women and men in traditional dress. Photographs of Utah depict Mormon leader Brigham Young; third president of the Mormon Church John Taylor; Salt Lake City; Gardo House; the Mormon Tabernacle; and Paiute Indians being baptized into the Mormon faith by Mormon men. California photographs show Yosemite; the Sierra Nevadas; Oakland; city scenes of San Francisco; and the mansions of Mark Hopkins, George Crocker, Collis P. Huntington, and Leland Stanford. Other photographs are of Paiute Indians, Navajo Indians, Pueblo Indians, Bannock Indians, Niagara Falls, Union Square and Central Park in New York City, and the Central Pacific Railroad. Also included are hand-colored photographs of Japanese women and men in posed scenarios, some with musical instruments. It is unclear whether these photographs were taken in the United States or in Japan. Photographers who contributed to this collection include Alfred A. Hart, B.A. Hawkins, J. Notman, Charles Roscoe Savage, and Isaiah West Taber.

  The collection contains 58 pieces, including correspondence, diaries, documents, ephemera, essays, journals, legal documents, manuscripts, and reports, which were collected by O'Neil while working for the Works Progress Administration. The great majority of these materials are typescript copies. This collection focuses on Mormon history, from its earliest days through the 1930s. Every aspect of Mormon religion, daily life and cultural expression is explored, including pieces of Mormon poetry and items on the history of Mormon theater. Of particular interest are those items that portray the relationship Mormon settlers had with their Native American neighbors. Subjects addressed within the collection include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Federal Writers Project, the Historical Records Survey, Native Americans in Utah, the Mormon Church, Mormon pioneers, Mormon poetry, Mormon social life and customs, Mormon theater, the history of Ogden (Utah), the Works Progress Administration, Utah history, Jedediah Strong Smith (1799-1831), Joseph Smith (1805-1844), Charles L.
