Rare Books
Playbills only from a collection of London theater material, dated from 1700-1890 collected by Augustin Daly in New York in 1891. The collection was titled variously: "First and last and festival nights, 1700-1890" or "Bills of Play". Originally 973 pieces in 5 volumes, the collection was ordered to be unbound and rehoused by Cary Bliss in 1981. 35 manuscript items were transferred to Manuscripts and cataloged separately with call numbers mssHM 63331-63365. Graphic material comprised of 11 photographs and an unknown number of prints were transferred to the Photographs and Prints and Ephemera collections respectively. Approximately 158 playbills are housed in a clamshell box with spine title "English Playbills, 1650-1890". A type written list of the playbills and their original page number in the volumes is included. A type-written copy of the original Daly sales catalog description and internal memos dated 1982 regarding the dispersal of the contents of the 5 volumes in a Provenance File.
