"The finest Viennese Art Nouveau periodical, and one of the most elegant of all periodicals, was 'Ver sacrum', the organ of the Viennese Secession. It was not a record of decorative art and architecture but [was more] ... a miscellany of literature, illustration and graphic design. ... [it was] a periodical with a complex message of design, a publication which would be covetable for its own sake as well as for its contents. ... Only in a periodical like 'Ver sacrum', that exquisite product of the Viennese Secession, is [this ideal] fully realised. Here each issue has been thought out afresh. Cover design, Jugendstil borders and decorations, type-face, the fastidious colour, the placing of each lithograph or woodcut, all serve together in a daring unity of style. Refined aestheticism is a dangerous gane to play, but here it is kept under perfect control and results in a classic of periodical design."--Extracts from 'The Art Press : two centuries of art magazines' / edited by Trevor Fawcett and Clive Philpott (London : The Art Book Company, [1976].
