Irish gentry photograph album with colorful illustrations
Visual Materials
An album with 46 card-mounted photographic portraits of members of the Irish gentry accompanied by colorful hand-drawn illustrations of people, flowers, animals, and amusing scenes. Most of the portraits are of adults, though there are two young girls near the end. Multiple members of some families are shown, such as the Rynds, the More O'Ferralls, and the Hones. There are three group photographs at the beginning of the album which are all dated 1889. One of these, captioned "A wet Picnic. 30.1.89" includes the family of Alfred, Prince of Edinburgh and later Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha, his wife, Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, and two of their daughters, Victoria, Princess Royal and later German Empress consort, and Alexandra (labeled here as "Sandra"), Princess Royal and later Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenberg. The last photograph in the album shows an unidentified ship at sea. The pages contain colorful hand-painted decorations and illustrations which personalize and highlight the photographs, such as the illustrations surrounding the photographic portrait of the Rev. R. Gibbings, D.D. of Trinity College, which include one of the Reverend paddling in a boat made from his overturned cap.
