Joseph Farington diary handwritten notes and transcriptions of Cosway entries

This collection contains research materials on English portrait painter Richard Cosway (1742-1821) and his wife, English-Italian artist Maria Cosway (1760-1838), compiled by art historian Diana G. Wilson (1932-1988) for her doctoral dissertation (never completed) at the University of California, Los Angeles, from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. The papers include Wilson's correspondence, research files and notes, dissertation drafts, and reproductions of artwork and manuscripts (including photocopies, photographs, negatives, slides, and microfilm). The materials expand from Wilson's research and development of a dissertation initially proposed as: "Richard Cosway: An investigation of the development of the role of the artist and the concept of portraiture in England, 1760-1820," but the collection includes materials about the lives and art of both Richard and Maria Cosway. Note: all materials dating from the 18th and 19th centuries are reproductions of originals.

Foreword to the diary of William Ingraham Kip

Handwritten foreword to Joseph A. Sullivan's intended publication of the diary of California Episcopal Bishop William Ingraham Kip (1811-1893). The forward traces the history of the Protestant Church in the San Francisco area during the 1850s, as well including a brief history of the Kip family and a biography of William Kip. The second half of the foreword focuses on James Edward Oglethorpe (1696-1785), founder of the Georgia colony. The book was apparently never published.

Joseph Nichols diary, 1758-1766

Journal kept by Joseph Nichols during May -- Nov. 1758. Long, detailed daily entries describe the formation of the company and regiment, the march from Farmingham, Mass. to Ticonderoga, military operations, including the battle of Carrillon; the commanding officers -- Jonathan Bagley, James Abercromby, Robert Rogers, Rufus Putnam, and others; regimental news and camp life, courts martial and punishments meted out for various transgressions, sickness, etc. Also included is a roster of Taplin's company. The rest of the manuscript contains miscellaneous daily entries, accounts, promissory notes, and a recipe "How to Make Ink;" this portion covers the period from Mar. 22, 1759 to May 1766. There is also the following title (crossed out): "Fortunatus Nichols Aboard the Cutter September 23. I Begun a journal." Also included are 9 receipts, promissory notes, etc. by Joseph and Fortunatus Nichols.

Joseph S. Paxson diary
Manuscripts
This daily diary documents Paxson's struggle with business and gold mining. He discusses in detail his financial problems, his loneliness in the city, and his unhappiness with his living situation. Paxson also notes all the ships arriving in San Francisco and the actions of the vigilance committees. At the end of the diary is an 11-page essay about the murder of James King and the hanging of James P. Casey and Charles Cora in May. Accompanying the diary is an incomplete transcript only covering January 1 to July 14.
