    Hiram C. Hazen materials

    Manuscripts

    Assorted materials relating to Hiram Corning Hazen. Includes two letters, one written to Hazen from his brother Chester Hilliard Hazen (1826-1899) in which Chester writes of Hazen's apprenticeship with a Mr. Devereux and of their uncle's lost dog (1847). The other letter is to Hazen's father Harvey Lord Hazen (1797-1874) from Hazen's uncle Howlet Hezekiah Hazen (1790-1860), who writes of his school subscribers in Norwich and Salem and asks for information about Harvey's schools (1829). Also included is an undated pastel drawing of a young Hiram Hazen (possibly a reprint), an undated photograph showing Hazen in older age holding a newspaper, and two newspaper obituaries on Hazen's death (1915).

There is also a substantial amount of material about Benjamin Davis Wilson and his business dealings in California. Topics covered in the collection include agriculture, land development in southern California, the history of the San Marino area, mining operations, water rights and irrigation, politics, society stories, and wills, court documents, and settlement papers related to the Shorb estate.

There are also papers of the various subsidiary firms of the Banning Company, as well as Banning family letters, and receipts of William and Hancock Banning.
