    U. S. Army Department of the Northwest records, (bulk 1861-1865)

    Manuscripts

    A collection of approximately 6,000 items from 1861 to 1904, it consists of documents, ledger books, receipts, muster rolls, payrolls, correspondence and other military records. The material details the workings of the paymaster's office of the U.S. Army Department of the Northwest primarily for the period 1861 to 1865. Although there is material for virtually all Union states, the documents are fullest for regiments from Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin. The collection also contains a few papers concerning the life and business affairs of John Oscar Culver after the Civil War, particularly the period 1880 to 1900 while he was living in California.

    Joel B. Clough Collection of United States Military Railroad Photographs / (bulk approximately 1863-approximately 1864)

    Collection of photographs depicting Union railroad engineering projects in Virginia during the Civil War from 1863-1864, given to Captain J. B. Clough on his retirement from the construction corps of the United States Union Army. The photographs were taken by Andrew J. Russell. Of particular note are views of bridge and railroad constructions in Alexandria, Fort Davis, Manassas, Culpeper, Potomac Creek, Bull Run, Fredericksburg, as well as images of wharfs, town views, military convalescent camps, soldiers, and the deck and sailors of the Russian frigate "Osliaba." The collection also includes a pen-and-ink drawing on board, with hand-colored lettering, entitled: "A Testimonial to Joel B. Clough from the Members of the Construction Corps, U.S. Military R. Rds of VA., dated December, 1864." The "Testimonial" is illustrated with several Civil War scenes drawn by artist William M. Merrick. The collection also includes a brass-handled walking stick inscribed to Joel B. Clough on the occasion of his birthday from the City Eng[inee]r Corps, 1874.

    The James William Eldridge collection consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, printed military forms, autographs, ephemera, and approximately 4000 portraits and contemporary photographs, which date from 1797-1902. The collection documents military history of the Civil War, from both the Union and Confederate sides, concentrating on commanding officers, military and naval operations and administration, the armed forces of South Carolina and Virginia, and the everyday life of the common soldiers (including prisons and medical care). Also included are materials on civilian administration and politics during the war years, concentrating on governors, mayors, and congressmen. The bulk of the collection deals with the American Civil War, although there is some material on the antebellum and post-war politics and military history, including the raid on Harpers Ferry and the post-war Navy. The collection contains materials from US presidents James A. Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, and Rutherford B. Hayes.

    The collection consists of personal letters among the Townshend family members, business correspondence, land papers and deeds, financial accounts, bonds, receipts, Government and political material, legal briefs and court opinions, literary material including epitaphs, poems, prayers and travel accounts, military material, wills, marriage settlements, family account books and diaries. Significant correspondents include George III, George IV, William IV and Victoria, as well as many members of the Royal family. Political correspondents include 1st Earl of Chatham, W.E. Gladstone, George Grenville, Lord Palmerston, Sir Robert Peel, Spencer Perceval, William Pitt, the Duke of Wellington, and John Wilkes. Important note: although this material includes the years 1769-1865 there is only one letter which refers slightly to the American Revolutionary War and no letters or other material deal with the American Civil War.
