Moses Brown papers

Manuscripts

This collection contains correspondence and business papers belonging to the shipping merchant Moses Brown in relation to his business in the West Indies, Spain, and Portugal. The letters are from agents and sea-captains to Moses Brown regarding his cargo. Also included are: bills of lading, invoices, accounts of sales of cargo, port changes, etc. The collection also contains several legal papers such as contracts and agreements. The collection is organized by the region of Brown's trade and commerce: Cuba and St. Thomas; Guadeloupe and Haiti; Jamaica; Martinique; Spain and Portugal; and Trinidad, St. Lucia, and Sint Eustatius (these categories are general in nature and not mutually exclusive; some of the ports show up in more than one of the categories). Browns' cargo consisted of various items including, but not limited to: sugar, potatoes, beef, fish, soap, butter, candles, coffee, lumber, lard, molasses, etc.

Elisha Oscar Crosby letter to Hiram T. Graves

Manuscripts

Crosby contests his suspension from the Knights Templar for "non payment of dues." He states that he "handed the full amount of fees for initiation, to one of the Sir Knights who attended my preparation and initiation." He defends himself by explaining his financial situation at the time and currently, and by listing his various political contributions in California during his career. He relates that he had to end his political career due to problems with his vision. He hopes that he has provided a sufficient case for reinstatement, and would like to remain in good graces in case his son becomes a Knight Templar one day.

A later version of the print made for Atlantic Mail Steamship Company (qv. priKMEpri 0083), with a number of changes: 1) added cabins along top deck, drawn in behind original figures; "Costa Rica" added to paddle-box; "AMSSCO" changed to "PMSSCO" on paddle-box; house flag replace; American navy jack, then used with merchant vessel, added to bow of the vessel. Focus of item: Costa Rica.
