Cycads
Cycads are among the oldest surviving plant families on Earth. They may superficially resemble palms or ferns, but they are most closely related to such conifers as pines and fir trees. Like these cone-bearing plants, cycads do not flower but instead produce cones that contain pollen or seeds. These distinctive plants have been part of The Huntington landscape since Henry E. Huntington’s day and now include many unusual species from around the world. Out of the approximately 360 species of cycads currently known, The Huntington holds more than 200 species. On this page is a small sample of The Huntington’s rich collection of cycads.
