Sharing the LOVE

For decades, Terri and Jerry Kohl have been drawn to Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculptures. Whenever they encountered one—whether in New York, Arizona, or elsewhere—they felt an almost irresistible urge to stop and take a photograph.

“LOVE has always been like a magnet to us,” Jerry explained. “There’s something about those four simple letters that draws you in. It almost calls you over to take a picture. And when you think about it, what could be a more perfect background for a family photograph than LOVE?”

Over the years, that fascination grew into an idea. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to bring one of these magnificent sculptures to Southern California, where thousands of other families could experience that same feeling?

Finding the right home was important. The Kohls wanted a beautiful setting that would welcome visitors while protecting the sculpture for generations.

With more than 1 million visitors annually, magnificent gardens, extraordinary art collections, and a longstanding commitment to caring for works of art, The Huntington offered an ideal setting for both public enjoyment and long-term stewardship.

Now, thanks to the Kohls’ gift, a monumental 12-foot-by-12-foot Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture will have a permanent home at The Huntington, near the entrance to the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art.

For Terri and Jerry, longtime Pasadena residents and supporters of The Huntington, the gift is deeply personal. Their own love story began in high school, and after more than five decades of marriage, they continue to share a passion for art, family, and their community.

They envision families, newlyweds, grandparents, and children gathering around the sculpture, making memories and sharing photographs with friends and loved ones around the world.

“The sculpture will stay right here in San Marino,” Jerry said, “but the message of LOVE can travel everywhere.”

The gift continues the Kohls’ longstanding support of The Huntington, including the Steven S. Koblik Education and Visitor Center, the institution’s Centennial celebration, and the restoration of the Rose Garden Tea Room.
