The Huntington offers, on average, 11 to 13 academic-year fellowships for nine months in residence, each with a stipend of $50,000, and 2 to 4 academic-term fellowships for 4-5 months in residence with a stipend of $25,000. All long-term fellowships are open to scholars working on projects in any of The Huntington’s collections strengths.
Long-term fellows are expected to be in continual residence at The Huntington between September and May, and to participate in weekly working group sessions during that time. Academic term fellows participate in the weekly working group sessions for the term in which they are in residence
Eligibility: Only those who hold a Ph.D. or who have successfully defended a dissertation by the application deadline are eligible. Tenure of fellowship: Nine months for academic year; four to five months for academic term fellowship Value of award: $50,000/academic year; $25,000/academic term

Eligibility: Nontenured faculty
The Thom Fellowships are intended to support nontenured faculty who are revising their dissertation for publication as their first monograph. Applicants must be pursuing scholarship in a field appropriate to The Huntington’s collections and must have received their Ph.D. after Dec. 31, 2021.
Berger Trust Future Leaders Fellowship in the History of British Art
Eligibility: Faculty members and post-doctoral scholars within 10 years of receiving their PhD; curators with the appropriate equivalent level of professional experience
Tenure: Two to ten months, may be taken at either The Huntington or Trinity Hall, Cambridge, or some combination thereof.
Supports research in the history of British Art - understood here to extend to the traditions of visual culture not only in the United Kingdom but also in the contexts of the British Empire, Commonwealth, and post-Commonwealth nations
Approximately 140 short-term fellowships are available for one to three months for research in areas where The Huntington’s collections are strong.
Eligibility: Graduate students; faculty members; postdoctoral scholars; working artists; creative writers; and independent researchers working on a scholarly project served by our collections. Tenure of fellowship: Between one and three months Value of award: $4,000 per month

Six travel grants for study abroad are available for research that will be carried out in libraries or archives outside of the United States or Canada, especially those in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, or Latin America.
We also offer nine exchange fellowships with Corpus Christi, Jesus, Lincoln, and New Colleges, Oxford; Trinity Hall, Cambridge; Trinity College Dublin/Marsh’s Library; the University of Birmingham; the University of Durham; and the John Rylands Research Institute and Library at the University of Manchester.
Eligibility for Travel Grants and Exchange Fellowships: Doctoral candidates who have advanced to candidacy (ABD) at the time of the application deadline, faculty members, and other postdoctoral scholars. Travel Grants
Recipients of the travel grants must be conducting research in a library or archive outside of the United States or Canada. Preference will be given to applications in areas of research in which The Huntington collections are strong. However, applications in all humanities fields will be considered. The Huntington will reimburse the grantee for economy round-trip airfare before the trip. A stipend of $4,000 will be paid after the grantee submits a detailed report on the research conducted. The travel grants can be taken up as early as July 1, 2027, and no later than June 30, 2028.
Exchange Fellowships
In most cases, accommodation and meals are provided by the college or university, although the timing of the fellowship may be subject to the availability of housing and to the schedule of the academic year in each institution. Fellows going to the University of Birmingham, the University of Manchester or Trinity College, Dublin will be provided with a stipend and must find their own accommodation. University of Durham provides a stipend, and self-catered en suite study bedrooms at Ushaw College (3.5 miles from Durham city center) will be available at a competitive rate. The Huntington will reimburse the fellow for economy round-trip airfare. Exchange fellowships can begin as early as July 1, 2027, and no later than June 30, 2028.

This is offered every other year to a distinguished historian of the Americas who wishes to conduct research in The Huntington’s collections and to undertake a moderate teaching commitment in the History Department at Occidental College. The Eleanor Searle Postdoctoral Instructorship in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine at Caltech and The Huntington
This two-year fellowship is offered every other year to recent Ph.D. holders in the field of History of Science, Technology, and Medicine. Awardees teach two courses per year at Caltech and pursue their own research agenda at The Huntington during the tenure of the award.
