Joycean Cartographies: Call for Papers

CALL FOR PAPERS
On Feb. 2–4, 2022, The Huntington will host an onsite conference in San Marino, California to celebrate the publication centennial of James Joyce’s Ulysses. In tandem with the conference, The Huntington will host an exhibition on novels and maps from the 16th through the 20th century, including a newly acquired series of engraved maps derived from Ulysses, made by the artist David Lilburn.

CONFERENCE THEME
Joyce’s Ulysses uses Dublin as map as well as palimpsest upon which to inscribe his vision of worlds past and present. This conference will explore approaches to literary study that make clearer the verbal and nonverbal coordinates of Joyce’s literary terrain and their global expressions. Topics will range from forms of visualization (schemas, maps, charts, word indexes) to decolonization, intertexts and intermedia, mapping as metaphor and places as texts, in an effort to open up new ways of reading. Topics might include:

  • Joycean strategies and schema in other aesthetic contexts
  • mapping Joyce’s reception in other linguistic and national traditions
  • cartographies of exile, reconstruction, recreation
  • the world-building projects of novels and maps, especially where they overlap
  • guidebooks and imaginative cityscapes
  • remapping Ulysses

PARTICIPATING IN THE CONFERENCE
The call for papers for this conference closed on June 1, 2021. The conference committee is currently reviewing submissions, and details about the conference program and registration will be posted by early fall 2021. Graduate students will also have the opportunity to register for one of two seminars related to the conference theme.
