Garden Sculpture Conservation Project

Gifts to the Garden Sculpture Conservation Project will ensure that The Huntington’s priceless outdoor sculptures are preserved for future generations of visitors to enjoy.
The outdoor sculptures gracing The Huntington’s gardens not only add beauty but also serve as accessible pieces of art and history. They have the power to stimulate creativity, provoke thought, and awaken curiosity in people of all ages.
Back in 1914, Henry E. and Arabella Huntington began acquiring a large collection of outdoor sculptures, personally deciding on the exact location for each piece of garden statuary. Most of these sculptures date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, although some are works by 20th-century American artists. Visitors today can see an array of statuary in different media and from various cultural traditions across Europe and beyond.
Throughout The Huntington’s gardens, there are more than 200 outdoor sculptures that withstand Southern California’s relentless sun and heat. These age-old masterpieces are also vulnerable to the surrounding plants’ overgrowth, root systems, and pollen and petals that can cause staining.
