Reacquiring Vesalius’ 1543 Fabrica

De humani corporis fabrica (Epitome: On the fabric of the human body, 1543), by Andreas Vesalius.

Please help the Los Angeles County Medical Association reunite Vesalius’ 1543 Fabrica with the rest of our collection by making a gift today.

The 1543 Fabrica is generally regarded as the most important and beautiful book published in the history of anatomy.

The Huntington is raising money to acquire a 1543 Fabrica by Andreas Vesalius that was the pinnacle of the Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA) Library from 1937 until 1992.

This was the first rare book that LACMA ever purchased, and they did so with funds raised from the Los Angeles Lions’ Club. When the LACMA collection came to The Huntington in 1992, the book’s significance was not fully understood, and because The Huntington has another copy, the Fabrica went to auction and was separated from the rest of the collection.

We now have the opportunity to help The Huntington purchase this copy of the Fabrica, and reunite it with the rest of the LACMA collection now at The Huntington.

Help us to raise $20,000 by April 30. To ensure that we reach our fundraising goal, LACMA will also be contributing to this important effort.

Your support will ensure that this irreplaceable work is accessible for future generations and will also help us preserve a vital piece of our shared history in the medical profession.

  • Your gift to this acquisition is fully tax deductible. The Huntington is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization classified under IRS section 501(c)(3). Taxpayer identification number: 95-1644589. Legal name: Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery.
  • If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Greenberger, associate director of major gifts, at 626-405-2263, or agreenberger@huntington.org.
