Livestream: Rauschenberg and ROCI in Asia
In 1985, Robert Rauschenberg began a five-year odyssey to make and exhibit art in 10 different countries. The project culminated in the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI), which celebrated cultural exchanges in artmaking. Rauschenberg’s work evolved in response to the varied cultures of the host countries, including China, Tibet, Malaysia, and Japan.
Scholars Hiroko Ikegami and Helen Hsu, with artist Stella Zhang and artist-scholar Xiaoze Xie, will discuss ROCI, its impact on Chinese audiences in 1985, and its profound influence on Asian and Asian diasporic contemporary art.
This event is organized by The Huntington, with support from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and its Rauschenberg 100 initiative.
