Huntington U: Laura Aguilar’s Lens

In this course, participants will explore the work, style, and legacy of artist Laura Aguilar. Her work depicts people and bodies traditionally excluded from art history, including lesbians, Latinas, large-bodied people, working-class people, and disabled people. The course combines the style of an accessible college seminar with a creative workshop and includes suggested work participants may complete, such as light reading, viewing, and creative work designed to enrich each session.

Across three sessions, participants will:

• Explore rare works by Aguilar at The Huntington and connect them to history, poetry, literature, queer photography, visual art, and the Los Angeles landscape.
• Visit a new show of Aguilar’s work at The Huntington.
• Use Aguilar’s work as inspiration for a photo and text project of their own, using materials provided by The Huntington.

Participants may choose to take a single class or all of them; there will be some overlap between classes, but each workshop will have its own unique learning objective and activity.
