In the Gardens of California’s Prison Landscapes
Event
Join Elizabeth Lara for a presentation about gardens at historic sites of incarceration, including Mission Santa Barbara, Alcatraz Island, and Manzanar.
Lectures
Based on her doctoral dissertation which explored relationships among people, plants, and prisons throughout California across different periods, this talk draws on ethnographic research into how gardens factor into complex heritage sites and how current sites of incarceration might be interpreted in the future. Lara will also discuss the work of Land Together, a nonprofit that seeks to cultivate justice and belonging by nurturing deep connections to nature, self, and community for people impacted by mass incarceration.
This event is co-hosted by the California Garden and Landscape History Society and The Huntington.
