Film Screening: ‘Pride and Prejudice’
The year 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth and the 20th anniversary of the 2005 film adaptation of the author’s beloved Pride and Prejudice. The movie stars Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Bennet) and Matthew Macfadyen (Mr. Darcy) as the story’s central romantic pair.
To celebrate the two anniversaries, The Huntington’s screening of the film will be introduced by Devoney Looser, former Huntington Fellow and author of the new book, Wild for Austen (St. Martin’s Press, 2025). Looser has delved into the Library’s collections to research Austen and other remarkable women writers of Regency England. In Looser’s opening comments, learn about Austen’s surprising, subversive relatives—whose papers from her maternal side reside at the Library—and the novelist’s centuries-long influence, including the wild films that almost made their way to the silver screen during Hollywood’s Golden Age.
