Class Series: Drawing The Huntington

Education and Visitor Center, Steven’s Classroom
Participants will use The Huntington’s art, architecture, and gardens to learn drawing techniques. Over the course of six classes, artist and author Richard Scott will help students improve their observation and drawing skills, enriching their visual experience. These classes are perfect for beginners, advanced artists, and everyone in between.
Session 1: How to See Like an Artist, Part 1
In the first session, students learn to transform how they see to confidently draw anything accurately. Students will use this method to draw a variety of interesting and fun subjects. The first session takes place in the classroom.
Session 2: How to See Like an Artist, Part 2
In the second session, students learn how to apply seeing like an artist to drawing three-dimensional subjects. They also explore a variety of drawing techniques. This session begins in the classroom and concludes with drawing various elements in the gardens.
Session 3: How to Sculpt with a Pencil
Students learn an effective approach to better understand light and form when drawing. They explore and analyze the behavior of light and apply these ideas to draw a variety of interesting forms. This session begins in the classroom and concludes with drawing various elements in the gardens.
Session 4: Perception and Logic
Students learn to employ different parts of the mind to simplify and make sense of complex subjects and draw them with greater skill. The session begins in the classroom and concludes in The Huntington's art galleries.
Session 5: Conducting with a Pencil
Students learn how to think differently when drawing to better capture the expressive nuances in a subject matter. This session begins in the classroom and concludes with drawing various elements in the gardens.
Session 6: The Poetry of Drawing
Students learn how to simplify, emphasize, and edit a subject matter to produce drawings with greater personal meaning. This class begins in the classroom and concludes with drawing various garden elements.
- Pencil: Blackwing Natural Pencil
- Sharpener: Kum Automatic Long Point (recommended)
- Kneaded eraser: Faber-Castell or General’s brand (recommended)
- Retractable eraser: Tombow Mono Zero Eraser with round tip
- Rechargeable electric eraser: Foyucool Electric Eraser
- Drawing pad: Strathmore 400 Series Recycled Drawing Pad, 130 g/m2 (80 lb.), 24 sheets in 9" x 12" size
Supplies and materials can be purchased online or through local art stores. Blue Rooster Art Supplies in Pasadena offers a 10% discount to Huntington drawing class participants. Mention the class at checkout to redeem the discount.
Key Details
- Registration includes admission to The Huntington.
- Suitable for all levels; no previous experience is necessary.
- The class series will include sitting and standing in the galleries and gardens. Students are welcome to bring a folding stool for sitting outdoors. Hats and sunscreen are encouraged.

- Tickets are not sold at the door for this event.
- To join the waitlist for this event, please email publicprograms@huntington.org. A space is not guaranteed, but you will be contacted if a space becomes available.
- To receive a refund, you must cancel at least 5 days prior to the event. Cancellations made within 5 days of the event will not be refunded.
