Chinese medicine is rooted in one of the world’s oldest systems of plant knowledge. The Huntington’s Chinese Medicinal Garden offers insights into humanity’s changing relationship with nature. Join Huntington curator Michelle Bailey and Chinese medicinal plant expert Ingrid Schneider for a presentation and tour of the Chinese Medicinal Garden.
In 2020, The Huntington acquired a large collection of Chinese medicinal plants and seeds from the Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm in Petaluma, California. The well-documented collection comprised hundreds of species, including rare plants not available elsewhere in the United States and many collected from China. Additional plants have been donated by Ingrid Schneider of the Learning Garden at Venice High School. These plants are still commonly used in Chinese medicine today. After a short presentation, attendees will walk to the Chinese Garden for a tour of the medicinal garden.
Ingrid Schneider is a horticulturist and community educator best known as the primary caretaker and instructor for the Traditional Chinese Medicine and medicinal herb gardens at the Learning Garden at Venice High School. She holds a master’s degree in traditional Chinese medicine from Emperor’s College in Culver City, California. Michelle Bailey is the assistant curator in The Huntington’s Center for East Asian Garden Studies.
