Explore American identity and individual belonging through poetry, artmaking, and musical performances in this free event for families.
Inspired by the Fielding Collection of American artworks from the 18th and early 19th century which can be seen in the exhibition "Becoming America" on view in the Virginia Steele Galleries of American Art.
Drop-In Activities | 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
- Hands-on Art Making:
Create a needlework craft keepsake to take home, in the style of needlework samplers created by early American children. - Poetry:
Compose and decorate a portrait of yourself through acrostic poetry, also inspired by artworks in the exhibition. - Musical Performance:
Enjoy the sounds of Corey Gordan and his band performing American Jazz selections. 30-minute performances at 11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 1:15 p.m. - Spotlight Talks:
Cool off inside the galleries and attend a short 10-minute spotlight talk about selected works on view from Jonathan and Karin Fieldings' collection of 18th and early 19th century American paintings, furniture, and decorative art. 10-minute talks at noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.
