On Gold Mountain
After Hours Performance in the Chinese Garden
Eight performance dates: May 5–8, 12–15
7:30 p.m.–9 p.m.
Experience a unique outdoor opera in the breathtaking Chinese Garden at The Huntington, based on the memoir On Gold Mountain. Composed by Nathan Wang and based on the best-selling book by Lisa See, this dramatic musical performance tells the true story of Fong See, a pioneer of Los Angeles’ Chinatown who immigrated to America to work and find his fortune. Along the way he overcame many obstacles, finding both love and hardship. Most importantly, he discovered himself. In the opera, we not only relive the experiences of Fong See, his American wife Ticie, and other Chinese pioneers, but we also realize the ways in which memory and experience influence our sense of who we are.
The opera features a colorful musical score by Nathan Wang, The Huntington's 2022–23 Cheng Family Foundation Visiting Artist in the Chinese Garden that blends Western and traditional Chinese music.
